Tomorrow morning the Census Bureau releases income, poverty, and health insurance statistics for 2010, based on the 2011 Current Population Survey (fielded in March). The single most important number to be revealed tomorrow is median household income. My guess is that the median will be little changed from the $49,777 of 2009 (which was 5 percent below the median of 2000, after adjusting for inflation). Behind the stability is the structure of the population, with lots of older Americans on fixed incomes (remember when a "fixed income" was a bad thing?) and lots of boomers in their peak-earning years. The drama is likely to be in median income by age among householders under age 55.
